Life Things: Cold Weather Knits {Holla Knits KAL & Snowflake}

Snowflake Shrug by Jean Chung

Snowflake Shrug by Jean Chung

Even California is getting colder these days.. Which means everywhere else would be even colder! Well, it's a good thing that we're knitters!

Snowflake Shrug is a design I published last year but didn't really get to talk about it much.

It was knitted in Bernat Alpaca and Universal Yarn Swiss Mohair held together. It creates this crazy romantic whimsical fabric when knitted up. Unfortunately, I have learned since then that Universal Yarn Swiss Mohair has been discontinued. I think Rowan Kidsilk Haze would work perfectly with this, though, and I put it in the suggested yarns section on the pattern page

I fell in love with this stitch. It's so easy, but adds a nice touch to this romantic shrug. And the shrug makes a great addition to the wardrobe for a fancy party! It could also be something to keep you warm on your wedding day :)

Movie Night Blanket by Jean Chung, in  Holla Knits Home  edition in 2014.

Movie Night Blanket by Jean Chung, in Holla Knits Home edition in 2014.

I was so excited to design this blanket, Movie Night Blanket, for Holla Knits. What's so exciting about blankets? After all, they're, like, gigantic swatches.

THIS!

And THIS!

So I made a pocket for a remote control. When you're all bundled up in a blanket, watching a movie on your comfy couch, the last thing you want to do is to get up to look for your remote control.

So you keep it right where your blanket is! :)

And this blanket is detachable. I knitted the blanket in one piece, and then STEEKED it to make it into 2 pieces. This was an idea that came to me after I learned to steek - I thought cutting through a big piece of knitting would be exhilarating! and also, thought, hey what a great way to circumvent the Boyfriend Sweater Curse? It's one piece of knitting, so you didn't really knit it for your significant other, but you both can enjoy it.

Actually, right now, this blanket lives in the room that's about to become a nursery. When unbuttoned, it's a perfect baby blanket size. I plan to use it to cover the baby swing seat, and use the other half for myself, when I have to hold him through many tired, sleepless nights. When he grows up, he can use the full-size blanket, all buttoned up!

So Holla Knits is having a flash sale tomorrow, and all the patterns will be available at 50% off! It's to promote their 2015 Holla Knits Knit Along, starting February 2. If you do participate, and finish ANYTHING by May 1, you can win a free pattern of the winner's choosing. You can choose any pattern from Holla Knits patterns as well as patterns from designers, Jennifer Dassau, Karin Kemper, Rohn Strong, Teresa Gregorio, Emily Ringelman, Annie Watts, Emma Welford, Andrea Sanchez, Karin Wilmoth, Leah Coccari-Swift, Lee Meredith, Claire Auger Denny, Sarah Hurwitz, Rusty Baker, Bo Balder, Emily Greene Blue, Patty Nance, Kirsten Singer, Casey Carroll, Allyson Dykhuizen.....

...and ME, of course!

Looking forward to seeing everyone's FOs!

My first (failed) attempt at KAL & Prize Giveaway

Jean ChungComment

So last year in the beginning of the fall season, I announced that I would like to do a knitalong with either Gentle Teresa or Andover. I also had some prizes and said that the deadline was in December (my first mistake; so many of you were trying to finish up holiday knitting!) I didn't really have that many participants so I think I would like to just giveaway my prizes. Today, I looked over the project page under Gentle Teresa, which had 36!!! projects already. Nothing under Andover yet but I know people purchased the patterns so they're maybe just not posting about their projects or the projects are hibernating... (I know my 3rd Andover is still sitting somewhere behind our bed)

So! This is how it's going to work (for both Andover and Gentle Teresa):

If you have a Ravelry account or a blog: Post pictures and blog about it if you haven't done so! Then email me the links at jdknitter (at) gmail (dot) com.

If you don't have Ravelry or a blog, then Email me at jdknitter (at) gmail (dot) com.

Deadline? I'll have to give those of you who are still finishing up projects so I'd say February 28, 2013!

Prizes: Those yarns from that post  but I'll be adding NEW prizes for every 10 new posts/emails I get.

How to increase your chance of winning the giveaway? SHARE YOUR STORIES. I know I do this too, but sometimes we just post pictures and that's it. But I'd love to hear about your experiences with the projects, the good and the bad. :)

Custom Knits 2 KAL

Jean ChungComment

Those of you who are following Wendy Bernard a.k.a. Knit and Tonic, the author of Custom Knits and Custom Knits 2, her Ravelry group is doing a KAL. I own signed copies of both Custom Knits and Custom Knits 2. Because Custom Knits was the very first knitting book I have ever purchased in my life, somehow it makes both the book and the author very special in my life.

Anyways, I don't normally do KALs (it's too much commitment for me) but all I'm doing now is knitting for my designs, I need something more fun to do. Like top-down sweaters and such. So why not?

I haven't decided which one to cast on but narrowed down to: Zigzag Pullover or Eyelet Cardigan.

I feel like I'll have more use for Eyelet Cardigan this summer, but I just love knitting in the round and endless Stockinette stitch.

I'll have to go see what kind of yarn I have in my stash and which project would better for the yarn.

Anyone joining us??
